Take 5 – Making Music, not just playing an instrument (part 1)

In my previous Take 5 post, I wrote about the various qualities that most of us think of when we consider what makes a great musician, qualities such as super talented, consistent, hard worker, etc.

I would make the case, however, that these qualities are just the starting point. The greatest musicians of all time strive to make music, to create a “magical moment,” and to communicate a message. The great musicians of the world have arrived at the place where they no longer are thinking about the technical aspects of their instrument. Instead, they sing through their instruments. They get into “the zone” and enter that freeing realm of true music making.

As church musicians, we have the greatest message in the world that needs to be communicated, the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. I believe all of us can strive to get beyond the notes and rhythms on our pages of music, and dig deeper to tell that story in a clear, powerful, and beautiful way!
