Finding more musicians for your worship team

What are you doing to find additional musicians for your worship team? Maybe you're at the point that you have a "deep" team with regulars and back-up members - that's great!

My experience has always been, though, that we have key positions within our teams that seem to "cycle through" on needing solid, competent musicians, positions such as drums, bass, rehearsal pianist, lead trumpet, etc.

In the past, I've tried using our church's weekly newsletter/bulletin to advertise these needs, but I have never had much success going in this direction.

In the last few weeks, I've seen an increase of interest in the instrumental groups here at our church. Here's what I'm attributing to this increase:

  1. Prayer - never underestimate the power of prayer, asking the Lord to provide your needs
  2. Word of Mouth - let others know what specific positions you're currently looking to fill
  3. People Leverage - enlist others on your teams to make your case for what and who you need!
  4. Follow up with potential musicians as fast as you can - it's vital to move quickly when you get contact information on potential musicians within your church. Move quickly on getting initial info and interest, but take your time on moving them within your groups to make sure they are a good fit!
  5. Related to word of mouth, we are currently in the process at our church in developing an "Equipping" Ministry/culture within our church by offering "Finding Your Niche" classes. Within these classes, various volunteer position needs are discussed. These classes were begun in February, and just a few short months later, I'm beginning to see the fruit of this approach. It's pretty awesome!
